Academy Arcanist

Academy Arcanist CoverToday kicks off the blog tour for Shami Stovall’s (pronounced sha-me) novel Academy Arcanist. My first-ever blog tour was for Shami’s novel Knightmare Arcanist (I can’t believe that was three years ago now) which is the first novel in her Frith Chronicles series. Academy Arcanist takes place in the same universe but is an entirely new story, so if you loved The Frith Chronicles then you are in for more fun with this new series. This post will contain no spoilers so have no fear as you read further.

This novel follows Gray Lexly who dreams of studying at Astra Academy, the prestigious school that trains arcanists who are those who can wield magic through a special bond with mystical creatures. Unfortunately, Gray’s dreams may kill him before he can attain his aspirations. He has nightmares where monsters attack him, and his injuries remain after he wakes up. One night, he is saved from his nightmare by Professor Helmith, a powerful arcanist, who invites Gray to attend Astra Academy. Before that can happen, Gray must bond with a mystical creature to become an arcanist himself. Will he bond with a unicorn? A pegasus? A kitsune? Whatever he bonds with will determine his magical abilities, so he must choose wisely.

The magic system Shami created within this story is really fun. There is plenty of variety and it all includes different creatures. The relationship between the creature and their arcanist is unique and I think the story is most interesting within these and inter-character relationships. This new series already has a second volume out titled Mimic Arcanist so you can easily jump in and continue Gray’s journey.

I want to thank TheWriteReads for including me in this tour, and a big thank you to Shami Stovall for providing this great story. Shami is a multi-award-winning author of fantasy and science fiction. Before that, she taught history and criminal law at the college level, and loved every second. When she’s not reading fascinating articles and books about ancient China or the Byzantine Empire, Stovall can be found playing way too many video games, especially RPGs and tactics simulators.
